In the Ear (ITE) Transistor Hearing Aids

Earmaster Model 550 "Golden" In-the-Ear Transistor Hearing Aid

This Earmaster Model 550 "Golden" full-shell in-the-ear hearing aid was manufactured by Earmaster Inc. in 1965.

(There is some doubt whether this is really the Model 550, or one of the 3 earlier models, the 300, 400 or 500 that came out between 1962 and 1964.) The only identifying numbers are on the front of the ear hook (5DLTL).

This is a large full-shell model for the left ear.

A unique feature of the Model 550 (and models 300, 400 and 500 also), and the reason for calling them "Golden" is that the case was made of electro-formed  nickel and then plated with real gold!

This made for aesthetically-pleasing aids. Also, they were completely hypoallergenic.

The white soft plastic band near the tip provided a better seal to prevent feedback.

The screw to the right of the microphone port is a screwdriver-adjustable volume control.

This was a large in-the-ear hearing aid. The faceplate measured 1¼" from top to bottom.
