Hearing Aid Batteries

Eveready RM-1, 3 & 4 Mercury Hearing Aid "A" Batteries

At the right is an RM-1 1.4 volt mercury hearing aid "A" battery used in the vacuum tube and transistor hearing aids in the 1950s.

The RM-1 mercury battery weighed about ½ oz., and measured ⅝" high by ⅝" in diameter.

The larger RM-3 weighed about 1 oz. and was 1" in diameter. The largest of the series, the RM-4 weighed about 1½ oz. and was 1 3/16" in diameter. All 3 sizes are the same length—namely ⅝".

The General Dry Battery Company produced the RG-1, which was identical in size to the RM-1 battery.

Mercury batteries are no longer sold today because of the large quantities of mercury in them and the consequent environmental concerns.

The picture at the right shows the three sizes of the RM mercury battery series. From left to right they are the RM-4, RM-3 and RM-1. There doesn’t appear to have been an RM-2 battery used in hearing aids.
