Deutsche Akustik CII Carbon Hearing Aid
This carbon hearing aid is one of the oldest in the
Museum. It was manufactured in Germany around 1905 by the Deutsche
Akustik Gesellschaft of Berlin.
It consists of two carbon microphones in a round
metal casing with a 4 step type volume control on the top, and an
earphone. The carbon microphones sit horizontally with a slight slope
towards the grill opening in the front of the case. This hearing aid is
2½ in. diameter and 2¼ in. height.

volume and the switch in the off position. A user could leave
the volume set at their favorite level and then turn the hearing
aid on or off using the switch on the earphone (see below) rather than
turning it off on the hearing aid itself. |

The Deutsche Akustik Model CII was more suited to
sitting on a table top than for wearing on the body, even though it has a
sturdy metal clip for fastening to a pocket. Although it looks heavy, this
hearing aid is surprisingly light at only 160 grams (5.6 ounces). |
